This book from the Pocket Paintings edition introduces the art of sculptor Aleš Veselý (1935-2015), presenting his diverse and experimental approaches in the creation of objects and sculptures, often made from found or industrial materials, which he even used for his monumental public art installations. His ideas are brought closer through his preparatory sketches, drawings, photographs of installations, and images of his sculpting studio. What is the relationship between freedom of expression and the traumatic experience of the Holocaust, or the following totalitarian oppression in Czechoslovakia? You are invited to explore works that carry allegories and powerful emotions. The book will convey the transcendence of personal experience, inner contradictions, and the process of spatial thinking in which objects acquire new functions and meanings. The book is published in conjunction with the exhibition Aleš Veselý: Retrospective - Alešville and the permanent exhibition 1939-2021: The End of the Black-and-White Era.
