Karikatura. Od Leonarda po Gillraye / Caricature. From Leonardo to Gillray (Grafický kabinet)

Primárně je za karikaturu označováno drobné dílko provedené několika rychlými tahy, jež vystihují humorně zveličené fyziognomické rysy zobrazeného. Jako karikatura bývají označovány také formálně a obsahově propracovaná díla, která jsou sociální a politickou satirou své doby. Nejstarší karikatury pocházejí již ze starověku, později k jejich oblibě přispěl Leonardo da Vinci, jehož studie jsou považovány za ikonické reprezentanty karikatury. K jejich evropskému věhlasu dopomohl především Václav Hollar, který celý soubor graficky transkriboval.

Ve výstavním katalogu budou představena nejzajímavější díla ze Sbírky grafiky a kresby od 16. do počátku 19. století, například tvorba Václava Hollara, Jamese Gillraye, Williama Hogartha nebo Marie Boissier. Zastoupeny budou také pamflety z počátku 17. století a další anonymní práce, jež poutavostí a originalitou nezaostávají za díly zhotovenými slavnými umělci.

A caricature is primarily defined as a doodle executed with a few quick strokes that humorously exaggerate the physiognomic features of the depicted subject. But works of complex form and content that serve as social and political satire of their time can also be called caricatures. The oldest caricatures date back to ancient times and later became popular thanks to Leonardo da Vinci, many of whose studies are considered iconic examples of the genre. In Europe, their fame was further enhanced by Václav Hollar, who created a graphic transcript of the entire series.

The exhibition catalogue will present the most interesting works from the Collection of Prints and Drawings, ranging from the sixteenth to the early nineteenth century, by artists such as Václav Hollar, James Gillray, William Hogarth, and Marie Boissier. The catalogue will also include pamphlets from the early seventeenth century and other anonymous works that match the creativity and originality of those authored by renowned artists.
