Joseph Uhl (1877–1945) is little-known in the art world. Born in New York, Uhl spent his entire working life in Germany, having studied at the Munich Academy, and soon left the medium of painting to fully embrace printmaking. Uhl's cycle Per Aspera ad Astra (1921–1923) overtly cites German symbolism, particularly the work of Max Klinger. It depicts the journey of a young person driven by his own ambition through the pitfalls and obstacles in his path, to achieve the pinnacle of his aspirations. Uhl's strength lies in his imagination, purity, and technical skill in execution. The publication accompanying the graphic cabinet of the first part of the cycle will provide a broader understanding of this graphic work.
