This inventory catalogue of the National Gallery Prague’s seventeenth-century German and Austrian paintings is the first comprehensive catalogue documenting this part of the gallery’s collection. These paintings belong to the National Gallery’s core artworks and there were already quite a few of them at the turn of the nineteenth century in the newly established Picture Gallery of the Society of Patriotic Friends of the Arts. There are 150 entries in the catalogue that have been documented on the basis of art history analyses, research, technical examinations, and restorations, and they are presented in the specific format defined for the edition series of inventory catalogues. The introductory essay provides an overview of how the collection at the National Gallery Prague developed, and reflects its contents within the context of art collecting.
